Mom’s Chocolate Cake

My Mom is the BEST baker I’ve ever met! Baking is her passion and everything she bakes is incredible. She made this cake for me on my 3rd birthday. It’s probably one of my first food memories and she’s pretty much made if for me every birthday since then. This is my go-to cake recipe because it is perfection. Its chocolatey and decadent. I’ve given this recipe out countless times and people can never believe how easy it is to make. Over the years, we’ve come up with a few variations of it as well (a vanilla version and a lemon version).  But this is the original.

Ingredients:

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 box chocolate pudding mix (2/3 cup)
  • 4 eggs
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips
  • Powdered sugar for topping

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Place all ingredients, except for the chocolate chips, into the bowl of a stand mixer (or a large bowl and use a handheld mixer). Mix for several minutes until all the ingredients are fully incorporated. Then fold in the chocolate chips. Pour batter into a well-greased angel food cake pan and bake for 50-55 minutes.  Once cake has cooled, remove from pan and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
