Burning Mandarin

One thing that I have missed the most these last few months is going out to eat at restaurants. I especially miss sushi. One of my fav spots is Katsuya. Aside from the spicy edamame, baked crab hand roll and rock shrimp, I have been dreaming about their spicy cocktail, the Burning Mandarin. It is SO perfectly sweet and spicy, just how I like it. I’ve been making my own version at home and it is honestly just as good.

Serves 1

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz Absolut Mandrin Vodka (or other orange flavored vodka)
  • 1 oz lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 3/4 oz orange juice, freshly squeezed
  • 3/4 oz cranberry juice
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup (recipe below)
  • 2 slices of jalapeño or serrano pepper
  • Sugar for rim

Directions:

First, prepare your cocktail glass, run a lemon wedge around the rim of a martini glass. Then add some sugar to a plate and dip the glass in the sugar.

Next, fill a cocktail shaker halfway up with ice. Then add the vodka, lemon juice, orange juice, cranberry juice, simple syrup and 1 slice of jalapeño. (If you like it extra spicy, you can muddle the jalapeño in the shaker before you add the ice). Then shake for about 20 seconds.

Pour the cocktail into your martini glass and garnish with a slice of jalapeño.

Simple Syrup

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water

Directions:

To make the simple syrup, add 1 cup of sugar and one cup of water to a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar is dissolved and then remove from heat. Allow to cool and then refrigerate until ready to use.
